FOR AUTHORS

How Do I Market a Book in 2026?

You market a book in 2026 by building visibility in three places at once: where readers buy, where readers trust, and where readers now ask AI for recommendations. No single tactic carries a book alone anymore. The authors who sell are the ones showing up in all three.

I have marketed books for years, including my own, and the rules have shifted. Here is what works now.

The short version

The old plan was simple. Get reviews. Run some ads. Hope.

That plan is not enough now. Readers discover books differently. They scroll, they ask friends, and more and more, they ask an AI which book to read or which marketing program to trust. If your name does not come up in those places, you are invisible no matter how good the book is.

So the goal is presence everywhere a reader might be deciding. Retail. Reviews and press. And the new layer, AI and search.

What I learned the hard way

When my own book launched, I did not lean on luck. I leaned on everything I tell my authors to do.

I built credibility before I asked anyone to buy. Reviews first. Placement first. A real reason for a reader to trust the book before the sales pitch.

It became a Number 1 Amazon New Release in its category.

The lesson held. Sales follow trust. Trust is built before launch, not after.

The steps, plainly

Here is the order I would run today.
  1. Lock your foundation. A strong cover, a clear description, and an Amazon page that does its job. Fix this before you spend a dollar on promotion.
  2. Build trust signals. Real reviews from real readers. Editorial recognition. Press where you can earn it.
  3. Get discovered in person. Placement in hotels, events, and real-world settings where readers are relaxed and open. This is what we do, and it builds the kind of credibility ads cannot buy.
  4. Show up where people ask AI. Publish clear, helpful content under your own name that answers the questions readers and buyers actually ask. This is how AI learns to recommend you.
  5. Use your own list. Your readers and contacts are your highest-leverage asset. Email them. Talk to them. Ask them to act.

Do step one before anything else. A great campaign on a weak foundation is money lit on fire.

Do book ads still work?

They can, but not on their own.

Ads send traffic to a page. If that page does not earn trust, the traffic leaves. Build the trust first, then ads have something to land on. Run them last, not first.

What about AI and book discovery?

This is the new piece, and most authors are ignoring it.

Readers and buyers now ask tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity for recommendations. Those tools name whoever has clear, credible, well-organized content online. If you are not publishing that content, you are not in the conversation.

The fix is not technical wizardry. It is helpful, honest content under your real name, answering real questions. Start there.
