Our favorite books of the summer!

A Dangerous Friendship: Minimalist green cover with a geometric diamond and pink text over a dark forest silhouette.
Robin Merle
A Dangerous Friendship: A Novel

A razor-sharp work of women’s fiction with psychological suspense, set against the glitter, grit, and manic energy of 1980s New York City.

After a divorce leaves her untethered and desperate to feel alive again, twenty-nine-year-old Tina is drawn into the orbit of Spike, a beautiful, seductive, seemingly invulnerable woman who lives like rules are for other people. Spike offers Tina everything she’s craving: adventure, reinvention, and a front-row seat to a world of power, sex, wealthy men, and unspoken danger. But the closer Tina gets, the more she realizes Spike’s charisma has teeth, and the less harmless her secrets prove to be. A darkly funny, witty, and propulsive thriller, A Dangerous Friendship is a story of obsession, betrayal, survival, and the terrifying moment you understand that the friendship you thought would save you might be the thing that ruins you.
Butterfly Games: Elegant navy blue cover featuring gold embroidery patterns and a royal crown.
Kelly Scarborough
Butterfly Games: A Novel

For fans of Philippa Gregory and Allison Pataki, Butterfly Games is Kelly Scarborough’s debut biographical historical fiction novel about a young Swedish countess whose youthful love affair with the heir to her country’s throne has profound personal and political repercussions.

In some games, winning means losing everything that matters.

In the opulent world of the Swedish royal court, Jacquette Gyldenstolpe walks a dangerous tightrope between romance and political intrigue. Neglected by her parents and ostracized by the people around her, the young countess falls in love with Prince Oscar, heir to the Swedish throne—but their passionate affair has far-reaching consequences for the new Bernadotte dynasty, which is already challenged by threats from inside Sweden and beyond.

By the time Jacquette learns that the butterfly game’s political and sexual maneuvering is not for the faint-hearted, it is too late. For she has a secret—one as precious to her as it is potentially devastating to the crown—and she will stop at nothing to protect it.
Based on a true story and set in stormy early-1800s Europe, Butterfly Games is a sweeping historical tale of forbidden love, fierce duty, and the cost of ambition. From the lavish ballrooms of Stockholm to the elegant manor houses of the Swedish countryside, Jacquette’s story will transport listeners to a world where every whisper could lead to triumph or ruin.
Chasing the American Dream: Sepia-toned image of a man in a fedora walking down a suburban sidewalk.
Lorelei Brush
Chasing The American Dream: A Novel

It’s 1955. David stands on the courthouse steps in Cleveland, buttoning his overcoat, when his gaze catches the martial stride of a passerby. He recoils. It’s Dr. Gerhardt Adler, a brutal ex-S.S. Major who David sent to Nuremburg shackled in the back of a U.S. Army Jeep. Determined to discover what that war criminal is doing in the U.S., David reverts to old habits he mastered in the Office of Strategic Services and pursues the Nazi. Feeling cheated by his role during the war, safe behind Allied lines, he sees another chance to be a hero. But how much will it cost?

Chasing the American Dream captures David’s quest for justice against those who committed crimes against humanity during World War II. To his horror, it transforms into a fight with the U.S. government who threatens his own American dream.
Sacred Crossroads: A magical key hangs over a small-town hardware store at sunset with the tagline,
Mitch Russo
Sacred Crossroads: The Path Appears When You Take The First Step

When the truth surfaces uninvited, then what?

In 1902, Noble Manning’s great-grandfather discovered a magical key. He chose to hide it. To protect it. And to never speak of it again.

The rule passed down through generations was simple: leave it alone.

Noble has honored that rule his entire life. Until his daughter called in the middle of the night.

"Dad, the key grandma gave me... it's glowing…” Buried memories, old journals, and decisions made long before she was born begin to surface. As strange events ripple through the town, Noble is forced to confront the truth his family hid in plain sight: the secret was never meant to stay hidden forever.

Now father and daughter stand on opposite sides of the same question.

Protect the life they’ve built… or uncover what their family was entrusted to face.

Sacred Crossroads is a novel of magical realism about legacy, identity, and the moment a carefully constructed life begins to unravel.

Some inheritances give you stability. Others demand courage.

Read it, and decide. Stay hiding in comfort or step into the unknown, a new world awaits!
Where the Heart Meets the Sea: Coastal Norwegian-style houses sit on a waterfront under a bright blue sky.
Kimbra Drake
Where the Heart Meets the Sea: A Novel

An emotionally rich love story with themes of lost and found family in a stunning Norwegian island setting.

Twenty-nine-year-old Ella Nilsen has never known her parents—or even how her mother died. Raised by her emotionally distant Norwegian grandmother, Hilda, Ella has long accepted that the topic of her parents is off-limits. WhenHilda passes away, Ella is shocked to find that her inheritance includes a summer cottage perched above the sea in a place called Lyngør, a remote island in Norway. To sell it, she’ll have to visit the cottage and take stock of what’s there—and maybe Lyngør holds the key to her mother’s mysterious passing, if she can get the locals to talk.

For as long as he can remember, Leif Arnesen, a thirty-four-year-old boatbuilder in Lyngør, has carried grief and shame from his father’s death, an accident that upended their small community. When Ella breezes into Lyngør looking for answers, her very presence stirs up old ghosts and earns her the villagers’ suspicions. As sparks begin to fly between Leif and Ella and their relationship blossoms quickly, everything Leif knows to be true threatens to capsize.

Perfect for fans of Jennifer Probst’s Our Italian Summer and set amid the rough and wild beauty of the Norwegian archipelagoes, Kimbra Drake’s Where the Heart Meets the Sea asks what happens when we’re forced to rewrite the stories that have defined our lives—and what we do with the next chapters.
Have a Great Summer: Vibrant beach scene with pink script, a bright yellow sun, and colorful beach umbrellas.
Francesca Cocchi
Have a Great Summer

Set against a vibrant Jersey Shore backdrop and bursting with summertime romance, hometown nostalgia, smart humor, female friendship, and millennial angst, journalist Francesca Cocchi’s dual-timeline teenage-crush-to-adult-lovers debut is the perfect beach read for fans of Annabel Monaghan, Carley Fortune, and Emily Henry.

If time is supposed to heal all wounds, Lina Mariano’s broken teenage heart never quite got the message—but 15 sunny, sandy, angsty Jersey Shore summers later, she finds herself unexpectedly facing her old crush, getting a new perspective—and maybe even a hopeful glimpse of the future . . .

Lina Mariano is stuck—in her hometown, in her job, and in the past. And after six years of writing up local weddings as a columnist for a popular lifestyle website, she’s wholeheartedly sick of nuptials. Worse, the next one on her list is none other than Sebastian Nikolaou’s.

Working high school summers with sweet, handsome Sebastian at his mother’s iconic beach restaurant, teenage Lina was totally wrapped up in the way he made her feel—until the night that everything changed. Even so, she’s embarrassed to admit how often she still thinks of him, and now, comparing their present lives is wrenching. It will take a careful look at her younger self, and some wisdom from the best friend who was there for it all, to see that making her dreams come true is up to her alone—whether or not those dreams still include Sebastian . . .

Poignant, engaging, and insightful, Have a Great Summer is an ode to the confused teenager in all of us, and a reminder of the blissful, excruciating, delicious days of summers gone by.

Dear Missing Friend

Three hearts. Countless letters. One impossible choice.

Through letters exchanged across oceans and Manhattan streets, Irish immigrant Catherine McGuirk navigates love, ambition, and heartbreak. Torn between her seafaring husband, the suitor she once refused, and her own dreams, Catherine’s fate unfolds in an intimate, epistolary saga of passion, resilience, and 19th-century life.
Blood Rivalry: A man in a suit walks toward a church steeple under a crescent moon on a city street.
Paul Attaway
Blood Rivalry: A Southern Novel of Power, Deceit, and Rebirth (Atkins Family Low Country Saga Book 3)

The third book in the Atkins Family Low Country Saga series finds Walker and Eli Atkins living in Charleston, South Carolina, fifteen years after the conclusion of Eli’s Redemption. Eli, a celebrated chef, and Walker, a lawyer, are brothers, building families and careers, each affected by the gruesome murder twenty years ago of Eli’s high school sweetheart. The hunt for the killer, in the public’s eyes, cemented Eli and Walker in roles neither wanted—Eli as the savior and Walker in need of a savior—thus casting a chill over their relationships.

Walker sees a chance to play the hero when, through his representation of two clients, he takes on the Governor of South Carolina, Johnny Dunsmore, the eldest son of Colin Dunsmore, the patriarch of a politically powerful family. For fifty years, Colin Dunsmore carefully crafted an image for the family, intent on placing Johnny in the White House. But Walker uncovers a history of deceit and murder that defines the family, and as he pulls at strings, Colin Dunsmore’s tapestry of lies begins to unravel.

Confronted with the Dunsmore’s ruthlessness and the knowledge that they will stop at nothing to win, Walker turns to Eli and together they embark on a cross-country race with the Dunsmores to secure the secrets, that if revealed, would upend their empire.
City Nature: Macro shot of a white flower with water droplets against a dark background.
Martha Retallick
City Nature: Tales of Ornery Plants, Opinionated Birds, Gardening Triumphs and Tragedies, and Capturing It All Through a Lens

A lavishly illustrated book that will look great on any coffee table – especially yours! And this is so much more than a nature-themed coffee table book. The word “project” is one of my all-time favorites, and you’ll find a lot of them in City Nature. Among other things, I’ll show you how to harvest and grind mesquite tree pods into flour, and I share my favorite mesquite cookie recipe.

I am also a passionate upcycler. And what is upcycling? It’s the act of repurposing worthy objects in ways that are useful or artistic. In City Nature, I will show you my favorite upcycling project. It involves a used chandelier – and my garden.

City Nature concludes with a list of suggested resources that encompasses books, websites, organizations, and businesses that will help you learn more about desert gardening, landscaping, and water conservation.
